Academy Week Activities
December 15th – 19th will be celebrated as Academy Week. The celebrations will include competitions, academy displays, videos, announcements, and in-house field trips / activities. Below is the outline for the tentative plan of actions:
PRE-ACADEMY WEEK ACTIVITIES:
- Academy Website will be updated by December 1
- InfoFlow videos (showcase and promote the academies as well as talk about Academy Wk.):
- STEM à Dec. 8
- ML à Dec. 9
- HSP à Dec 10
- ENT à Dec 11
- IS&L à Dec 12
- Academy Week competitions are announced and opened on December 9th. Deadline for submission of entries will be Wednesday, Dec.17.
SCHOOL WIDE ACADEMY ACTIVITIES
- Monday, December 15:
- Academy Week kickoff: There will be a display by the auditorium or the two entrances where academy students will be handed lanyards.
- There will be daily infoflow presentations and announcements pertaining to activities and events all week
- Academy celebration sheet cake will be on displayed and served during the lunch periods
- Acceptance of entries for the 2 categories of competitions begins
- A Quiz on the academies at Blair
- A creative production (Essay, video, music/rap, play, etc) competition on the academies
- Tuesday, December 16:
- A video on the academies at Blair will be aired during advisory
- InfoFlow presentations and announcements will continue
- Wednesday, December 17:
- Competitions end; all entries are collected
- InfoFlow presentations and announcements will continue
- Thursday and Friday, December 18 and 19:
- Entries are judged and shortlisted
- Shortlisted entries are announced on Friday

INDIVIDUAL ACADEMY PLAN OF ACTIONS
The ESOL Academy – Jody Tomesek
- Planned Parenthood presentation for non-Spanish Speakers
- A continuation of a presentation given to the Spanish speaking ESOL students last month
- Presentation will be given to two groups – divided by gender and for a full period
- Date and period TBD. Our contact has not solidified her availability
- Legal presentation about 4th amendment rights – presentation in Spanish and English (for our Spanish speakers)
- Presenter (bilingual) will come to discuss and present situations for students to learn when the 4th amendment applies to them
- Presentation is entertaining and dynamic and will be very informative to our students
- Solidification of availability during academy week needs to be determined. If presenter cannot come during academy week, we will do this again later in the year and invite all upper level ESOL students. Presentation will be in English if it is done at another date.
The 9Th Grade Academy – Leslie Van Blaha
- Guest speakers going to Connections classes during 2nd, 4th, and 5th period (A and B). 10 speakers total. They have not told me when they want to come yet.
The Academy of Human Services Profession (HSP) – Lisa Seid
- I have arranged for approximately 15 guest speakers to present to my HSP students on December 18th. Every strand has several guest speaker assigned to it.
- Early Childhood Development
- Teacher Education (Teacher Academy of Maryland)
- Health and Fitness
- Psychology and Social Services
See attached sheet listing the specific guest speakers, room assignments, A-V needs, etc.
- All HSP students will have the opportunity to attend 1 session (possible 2 in Early Childhood Development) on December 18th, during period 2. The Early Childhood Development students will also be able to attend one period 4 sessions.
- All HSP students had the opportunity to complete and return their survey to me last week. I am looking forward to receiving several more surveys next week. Thus far, I have received approximately, 143 survey responses.
The Academy of International Studies and Law (IS&L) – Kevin Moose
- Thursday, December 18, Period 6: Mr. Joe Cirincione from the Ploughshares Fund will visit our Peace Studies class. Other students will be invited to attend as an in-school field trip.
- Tuesday, (Dec 16), Wednesday (Dec17), or Thursday (Dec 18): Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia, through their Outreach Program, will visit Period 5A Arabic classes. Academy students will be invited to attend as an in-school field trip.
- Monday, (Dec) or Wednesday, (Dec 17): A U.S. State Department lawyer, specializing in matters of international law and human rights law, will visit Period 3 Anne Manuel’s International Human Rights class. Academy students will be invited to attend as an in-school field trip.
- Monday (Dec 15) or Wednesday (Dec 17) Attorney Karl Protil from the Maryland Association of Justice will visit Stefanie Weldon’s Period 3 Justice, Law and Society class to discuss matters of criminal law and juvenile justice. Academy students will be invited to attend as an in-school field trip.
- Stefanie Weldon also wants to make her own arrangements to have a representative of the American Civil Liberties Union visit one of her Period 1 or Period 3 classes. When this is finalized this will be made available to other academy students as an in-school field trip.
- I am also considering an after school activity with speaker(s) from the American University School of International Service. Dr. Peter Howard and Dr. Paul Wapner have contacted me. AU runs a great summer program for high school students. This could be any day during 8th period but has not been finalized.
The Academy of Media Literacy – Michael Horne
A series of speakers throughout the week – hopefully one each day, during the lunch time periods.

Wednesday, December 17th – Jonah Lobe – 3D Graphic designer for Video Games

The Academy of Entrepreneurship and Business management – Kevin Murley
Event to be held during 5a and 5b
Students will be given choice of attending a speaker event.
On 12/17, through my partnership with Bowie State U, Blair alumni participating in AMA (American Marketing Association) will be a part of Alumni Day event with counseling department. Business students will speak to current students interested in what to expect when they pursue business in college.
On 12/18, students can attend an interactive speaker event that focuses on business communication and team building during 5A/5B in room 221
On 12/19, students can attend an interactive speaker even that focuses on the importance of business forms and corporations for entrepreneurs during 5A/5B in room 221
On 12/16, several (possibly 5) Blair entrepreneur students would like to set up a table outside the SAC during lunch to sell products they produce or sell such as pastries and jewelry.
